Volunteers and donors are the backbone of Shelter. Without them, we would collapse, leaving children and families in need without critical services. We are so fortunate to live and work in a community of extraordinarily caring people who share with us the gifts of their time, talents, and possessions and who make such a positive impact. Our volunteers and donors are appreciated more than they will ever know!

Here at Shelter, we are continually amazed at the creative ways people offer their help, from specialized drives to event planning and items they donate. Knowing the love, caring, and generosity for children in need keeps us going during the most difficult of times.

Sadly, there are times we must say no to a volunteer or a donor. When it is necessary, we are not turning away the person, but the type of volunteering or donation offered. For example, we receive offers from people who want to cook for children at our Emergency Group Homes, and we have to decline. Because of confidentiality issues and the restrictions of the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) licensing, volunteers are not permitted to work directly with children in the homes.

Another example is items we can’t accept like car seats due to liability issues and safety regulations because of all the recalls. As much as we dislike saying “no,” our first responsibility and obligation is to those we serve.

There are many volunteer opportunities and donations needed that will have a significant impact on the lives of children. Below are some examples. If there is a particular way in which you would like to help, or something you would like to donate that isn’t listed, please contact our Development Coordinator, Zoe McGrath at zmcgrath@shelter-inc.org or 847-595-0180. We would love to hear from you!
