Earning accreditation is one of the ways in which Shelter chooses to ensure the highest standards and best practices for those we serve and deliver full transparency of our fiscal management and results-oriented outcomes.
We’re pleased to report our record has remained unbroken, and once again, we’ve achieved accreditation. We’re proud of this accomplishment as it takes hard work and commitment from our staff and board of directors through the rigorous and multi-stage four-year process meeting the most stringent requirements.
Who Accredits Shelter?
The Council on Accreditation (COA) is itself a non-profit agency that, since 1977, has been accrediting a full continuum of human and social services working with over 1,600 organizations. They use a peer-based review system with highly skilled staff and over 500 volunteers with extensive experience in their fields.
What Does the COA Review?
Everything! Their standards are divided into three parts:
- Administration and Management Standards
- Service Delivery Administration Standards
- Service Standards
Translated, that means they put under a microscope our financial management, clients’ rights, supervision, training, professional relationships, policies and procedures, quality improvement process, and the list goes on. By the time they’re done, they know how much we pay for sticky notes and how often we clean our coffee pot.
