“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.” – Maya Angelou
During the Covid-19 pandemic, we can’t change that our lives have been altered and that stress and anxiety are rapidly becoming the “new normal” for many of us. But we CAN change our attitudes and keep our mental health intact.
1. Recognize that stress is a normal human reaction, and whatever you’re feeling is shared by others. You’re not alone!
2. Make a conscious decision to control the things you can. The more we take control, the less stress we have.
3. While it’s important to stay informed, don’t get overwhelmed by the news. It’s just as important to disconnect and find a balance between the two.
4. Stay in touch with family and friends. Feelings of isolation are known triggers for stress, and others need you as much as you need them.
5. Maintain a healthy diet. Stress can play havoc with your eating habits, but unregulated blood sugar levels and weight gain will only stress you out more.
6. Keep physically active, whether it’s yoga, stretching, or walking around the block. Exercise releases your endorphins that have a natural calming effect.
7. Get plenty of sleep and rest. If you’re having trouble sleeping, avoid stimulants before going to bed, and replace them with whatever you find soothing like a good book, warm milk, a hot bath, or music.
8. Put aside time each day just for you. Listen to a mindfulness app, meditate, write in a journal, clean out a drawer, or sing a song. There are endless possibilities!
9. Remind yourself of how strong you really are. Look back on all the things you’ve accomplished and the challenges you’ve overcome. You’ll get through this one stronger than ever.
10. Stay in the now. If you’re having a particularly stressful moment, connect your mind and your senses. Focus on taking a few deep breaths. Touch things around you, notice the smells, sights, and sounds nearby.
11. Remind yourself you ARE making a difference just by practicing social distancing.
12. Make a list of your accomplishments each day. When the pandemic is just a memory, you’ll be amazed at all you did.
