Foster Care

Shelter, Inc. offers various foster care programs for children and adolescents from birth through age 17.

Emergency Foster Care, Emergency Group Homes, Home of Relative Foster Care and Traditional Foster care.

Emergency Foster Care is the longest existing program of its kind in the Northwest Suburbs and can be accessed by any child in the community, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This service is for families who are experiencing a crisis that impacts on their ability to care for their children such as;

  • Eviction
  • Divorce
  • Unemployment
  • Parental or guardian hospitalization
  • Mental illness
  • Substance abuse
  • Domestic violence
  • Abuse and neglect
As part of the Emergency Foster Care Program, families, with the assistance of foster care caseworkers, work to resolve the problems that brought the children or adolescents into placement so that they can be reunited as quickly as possible.  Whenever possible, children will be transported to their schools.
Emergency Group Homes provide emergency housing for boys and girls ages 11 through 17.  The homes provide a safe place and cooling-off period for families who are experiencing parent-child conflicts, adolescents running away from home or other family crisis.
Home-of-Relative Foster Care gives children a sense of identity and belonging. Foster Care caseworkers will work with family members to ensure a safe and secure environment while working to reunite families whenever possible.
Traditional Foster Care can be arranged when there are no relatives available and a longer-term placement is appropriate. Foster care is not a permanent solution and caseworkers strive for reunification of children and adolescents with their families whenever possible.
